Dr Jacob was honored by the East Jefferson General Hospital Auxiliary as a 36th annual "Great Gentleman" award winner.

The members of the East Jefferson General Hospital Auxiliary have announced the recipients of the 36th annual Great Lady/Great Gentleman Award. The award is given to local residents who have made outstanding contributions to the community through volunteerism.

This year’s honorees are Dr. Jack Andoni of Metairie, Joe Baucum of Barataria, Virginia Cullens of Metairie, James Hudson of Kenner, Dr. R. Daniel Jacob of Metairie, Elaine Prager Ridgley of Metairie, Sammy Logan Steele III of Marrero and Gordon Stevens of Metairie.

Dr. R. Daniel Jacob is a physician in private practice of otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery. He is a member of the staff of East Jefferson General Hospital.

He is an assistant clinical instructor at both LSU and Tulane University medical schools. As a physician and a surgeon, he has led more than 20 medical mission trips as president and co-founder of the New Orleans Medical Mission Services. That group has donated truckloads of supplies to local groups since Hurricane Katrina, provided 2,800 pounds of food to Second Harvest Food Bank, and provided both the New Life Center and Greater New Orleans Health Care Clinics with medical equipment and furniture.

Jacob serves as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Old Metairie. He has been a member of the Serra Club since 2000.

For many years, Jacob has served on the advisory board of the Daughters of Charity Community-Based Health Care System.
